What is a "Speakeasy"?

by Foto & Podcast by Larsen ApS 29 Jun 2024

Speakeasy bars, also known as secret bars, have a fascinating history and a unique place in today's bar world. This article will explore what a speakeasy is, its origins, its evolution over time, and how modern speakeasies create a special experience for their guests. We will also provide tips on how to open your own speakeasy bar.

1. The Origin of the Speakeasy

Speakeasies emerged in the United States during the Prohibition era (1920-1933), when the production, sale, and transportation of alcohol were illegal. These secret bars were established to serve alcohol covertly to avoid detection by authorities. The term "speakeasy" comes from the need to speak quietly about these places to avoid attracting attention.

2. The Atmosphere of a Speakeasy

Traditionally, speakeasies had a discreet facade, often hidden behind a false wall, a secret door, or in the basement of a seemingly legitimate establishment. Inside, the atmosphere was often exclusive and intimate, with dim lighting, comfortable furniture, and sophisticated decor. Jazz music and other period entertainment were also characteristic of speakeasies.

3. Modern Speakeasies

Today, speakeasies have been revived and are popular for their mystique and ambiance. Modern speakeasies retain many traditional elements, such as hidden entrances and an intimate atmosphere, but are also known for innovative cocktails and top-notch service.

a. Hidden Entrances

Modern speakeasies often use creative methods to conceal their entrances, such as phone booths, bookshelves, or back rooms in other businesses.

b. Atmosphere and Design

These bars maintain the nostalgic vibe with vintage furniture, dim lighting, and historically inspired decorations. Some places even feature live jazz music to complete the experience.

c. Cocktails and Menus

A key part of the speakeasy experience is the unique and creative cocktails. Bartenders in speakeasies are often skilled mixologists who experiment with flavor combinations and presentation.

4. How to Open a Speakeasy Bar

If you are considering opening a speakeasy, there are several key elements to consider to create an authentic experience.

a. Secret Entrance

Consider how your speakeasy will be hidden. This could be through a false facade, a secret door, or a creative entrance like an old-fashioned phone booth.

b. Design and Atmosphere

Invest in vintage furniture and decorations, and create an intimate and cozy atmosphere with dim lighting and comfortable seating.

c. Cocktails and Service

Focus on creating a unique cocktail menu with exciting and innovative drinks. Hire skilled bartenders who can provide guests with a memorable experience.

d. Marketing and Branding

While speakeasies are secret, you still need to market them to attract guests. Use social media and word-of-mouth to create a mystique around your bar.

5. Popular Speakeasies Around the World

a. PDT (Please Don’t Tell) in New York City

One of the most famous modern speakeasies, hidden behind a phone booth in a hot dog restaurant.

b. Nightjar in London

Known for its live jazz music and creative cocktail menu.

c. 28 HongKong Street in Singapore

A stylish speakeasy with an excellent cocktail menu and an intimate atmosphere.

6. The Future of Speakeasies

Although speakeasies have their roots in the Prohibition era, their popularity is far from fading. In fact, there is a growing interest in these secret bars as people seek unique and memorable experiences. With innovations in mixology and design, speakeasies will continue to evolve and attract new generations of guests.

Speakeasies offer a unique bar experience that combines historical nostalgia with modern innovation. Whether you are visiting a speakeasy or considering opening your own, there is something magical about this secret world of hidden bars and creative cocktails.
