Ice Balls vs Large Square Ice Cubes – Which Is Better?
Share
Ice balls and large square ice cubes are both used for whisky and spirit-forward cocktails. Both create a slow, elegant serve compared with many small cubes, but the difference is less dramatic than shape alone may suggest.
Which melts more slowly?
For the same amount of ice, a sphere theoretically has a low surface area relative to its volume and can therefore have an advantage. In practice, actual size, ice temperature and how much liquid surrounds it often matter more than the difference between one large ball and one large cube.
Large square cubes
Advantages:
- Easy to produce in standard moulds.
- Sit steadily in a lowball glass.
- Easy to organise and store.
- Visually suit Old Fashioned and Negroni.
See the XL ice cube tray.
Ice balls
Advantages:
- Elegant premium appearance.
- Roll naturally in round lowball glasses.
- Good for whisky, rum and spirit-forward drinks.
- Can have slightly less surface area than a cube of similar volume.
See the round ice ball tray.
Which glass?
Always check the diameter. A beautiful ice ball is no use if it cannot pass through the glass opening. A roomy lowball suits both shapes. Browse lowball and whisky glasses.
For Old Fashioned
Both a cube and a sphere work. A large square cube is classic and easy to position, while a sphere creates a more decorative look. See our Old Fashioned guide.
For whisky neat?
If you want to analyse whisky aroma without dilution, do not use ice. Balls and cubes are for a colder serve with gradual dilution.
Clarity and shape
A transparent cube or sphere looks more premium, but clarity does not automatically change melting speed. Read our clear ice guide.
