Flat White vs. Cappuccino – What’s the Difference?

Flat White and cappuccino are both espresso-based milk drinks, but they are not the same. A Flat White is typically compact, coffee-forward and finished with very fine microfoam, while cappuccino usually has a more pronounced foam layer and more volume on top.

Recipes vary between cafés, countries and coffee traditions, so fixed millilitre rules can be misleading. The useful distinction is balance, cup size and milk texture.

What is a Flat White?

Flat White is strongly associated with Australia and New Zealand, although its exact origin is debated. In modern cafés the name usually describes a relatively compact espresso-and-milk drink with very fine microfoam and a clear coffee character.

“Flat” does not mean foam-free. Instead, the foam is finely integrated into the milk, creating a flatter, glossy surface.

What is a cappuccino?

Cappuccino normally has a more pronounced foam structure and therefore feels lighter at the top. Modern cafés often use microfoam for both drinks, so the distinction may be subtler than older recipe diagrams suggest.

Is Flat White always made with a double espresso?

No. Many cafés use double espresso or ristretto-based recipes, but this is not a universal rule. The actual espresso dose should be defined in the café’s recipe card.

Why does Flat White often taste stronger?

Usually because it combines a relatively high coffee-to-milk ratio with a compact serving size. That does not automatically mean more caffeine than every cappuccino.

Which is best for latte art?

Both work with correctly textured milk. Flat White is often associated with glossy, fine microfoam that works especially well for latte art, but modern cappuccino can be presented with latte art too.

Which belongs on the café menu?

Flat White makes sense when guests want a more coffee-forward milk drink between espresso/cortado and latte. Cappuccino is more universally recognised. A small café does not necessarily need both if they are effectively made the same way in practice.

FAQ

Is Flat White stronger than cappuccino?

It often tastes more coffee-forward, but caffeine depends on the actual espresso dose.

Is Flat White the same as latte?

No. Flat White is normally smaller and more coffee-forward with thin microfoam, while latte typically contains more milk.

What milk texture is correct?

Both benefit from even microfoam. Flat White should be especially fine and integrated; cappuccino can have more volume and a more noticeable foam structure.
