Cappuccino vs. Latte – What’s the Difference?

Cappuccino and latte both combine espresso and milk, but they create two different drinking experiences. Cappuccino is usually more compact, more coffee-forward and has a more pronounced foam structure, while latte normally contains more milk and tastes softer and milder.

There is no single international standard followed by every café down to the millilitre. Cup size, number of espresso shots and milk texture vary by market and venue. The useful distinction is the balance between coffee, steamed milk and microfoam.

What defines a cappuccino?

A cappuccino balances espresso, steamed milk and foam. Many modern cafés use fine microfoam rather than very dry, airy foam. The result is creamy while still allowing the espresso to remain prominent.

What defines a latte?

A latte typically contains more steamed milk and a relatively thin layer of microfoam. The higher milk volume softens the espresso and makes latte a flexible base for flavours such as vanilla, caramel and hazelnut.

Why does milk texture matter?

Milk is not simply volume. Texture changes mouthfeel and perceived sweetness. Both drinks usually benefit from glossy, even microfoam without large bubbles, although cappuccino can have a more noticeable foam structure.

Which one is stronger?

If both use the same espresso dose, caffeine is not determined by the drink name. Cappuccino may taste stronger because there is generally less milk around the espresso. Shot count, however, varies between cafés.

Which works best with syrup?

Both can be flavoured, but latte is often the easiest platform for flavoured coffee. The larger the drink, the more important standardised syrup dosing becomes.

Which belongs on a café menu?

For many cafés both have a clear role: cappuccino for guests who want a smaller, more coffee-forward milk drink, and latte for guests who prefer a larger, softer drink or added flavours.

FAQ

Is cappuccino just a small latte?

No. Size is part of the difference, but proportions, foam structure and desired mouthfeel differ as well.

Does cappuccino have more caffeine than latte?

Not necessarily. Caffeine depends on the actual espresso dose.

Can cappuccino be made with plant-based milk?

Yes. Foaming performance varies by product, so a barista-style plant drink may be useful when consistent microfoam is important.
