Almost every bartender encounters it: the drink is perfectly shaken, but the cocktail shaker will not open. The two parts can feel almost welded together.
Usually nothing is wrong. Cold temperatures, metal and a tight fit create an effective seal, particularly with a Boston shaker. A Cobbler can also stick around the lid or cap.
Why does a Boston shaker get stuck?
The two parts are set together at a slight angle to create a tight seal. Ice rapidly chills the metal, which contracts slightly and reinforces the mechanical connection.
That seal is exactly what prevents leaking while you shake. Afterwards, it needs to be broken in a controlled way.

How to open a Boston shaker
- Hold the larger tin securely in one hand.
- Find the side where the smaller tin visibly angles away from the larger one.
- Give the side of the large tin near the seal a firm, controlled tap with the heel of your hand – not directly on the rim.
- When the seal releases, twist and separate the tins carefully.
Technique is more useful than brute force.
Where should you tap?
On a correctly sealed Boston shaker, there is usually a point on the side where a short tap changes the fit enough to break the seal. Use your hand, never a metal tool or the edge of the bar.

Why does a Cobbler shaker get stuck?
A Cobbler usually has three parts: body, lid with built-in strainer and a small cap. Cold can tighten the fit, while sugar, syrup or juice may dry in the joints.

Dry the outside for grip, then twist the parts in a controlled motion rather than simply pulling straight up.
