Piña Colada – Coconut Cream, Coconut Milk or Cream of Coconut?
Share
If your Piña Colada turns out too thin, too rich or lacks that familiar sweet coconut flavour, the problem is often not the rum or pineapple juice – it is the coconut product.
Coconut milk, coconut cream and cream of coconut are not the same thing. They differ in sweetness, fat and consistency, so they cannot always be swapped 1:1.
This guide explains the difference and shows what we would choose for a classic Piña Colada, a less sweet version and a frozen drink.
If you want the drink itself, see our existing Piña Colada recipe. Here we focus specifically on the coconut base.
Quick comparison
| Product | Sweetness | Consistency | Classic Piña Colada? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coconut milk | Usually unsweetened | Thinner | Can work, but needs adjustment |
| Coconut cream | Usually unsweetened | Rich and thick | Can work, usually needs added sweetness |
| Cream of coconut | Sweetened | Rich and creamy | Yes – the classic cocktail choice |
The key word is sweetened. Cream of coconut provides coconut flavour, body and a significant part of the drink's sweetness in one ingredient.
What is coconut milk?
Coconut milk is generally made from coconut and water. It is widely used in cooking, normally unsweetened and thinner than coconut cream or cream of coconut.
Can you use coconut milk in Piña Colada?
Yes, but the drink will usually be lighter and less sweet. If you replace cream of coconut directly with unsweetened coconut milk, expect to add some sugar syrup or other sweetener.
Add it gradually because brands vary considerably in coconut intensity and fat content.
What is coconut cream?
Coconut cream is similar to coconut milk but typically contains more coconut, making it richer and thicker. It is often unsweetened and primarily intended for cooking.
This is where the naming causes confusion: coconut cream is not automatically the same as cream of coconut.
Can coconut cream be used in Piña Colada?
Absolutely. It creates a rich coconut texture, but if it is unsweetened you need to balance pineapple, rum and sweetness yourself.
That is useful if you want a less sweet Piña Colada.
What is cream of coconut?
Cream of coconut is a sweetened, rich coconut product strongly associated with classic Piña Colada and cocktail making.
It provides coconut flavour, sweetness and texture together, making the drink easier to reproduce consistently.
BarGear carries products including Coco Lopez and Reàl Coco Cream of Coconut.
What is best for a classic Piña Colada?
For the familiar sweet and creamy cocktail-bar style, we would choose cream of coconut.
- Classic, rich and sweet: cream of coconut.
- Less sweet and easier to control: unsweetened coconut cream + sweetness to taste.
- Lighter texture: coconut milk + adjusted sweetness.
Coco Lopez and Piña Colada
Coco Lopez is almost synonymous with cream of coconut in cocktail culture and is an easy route to the classic profile.
The BarGear product is listed as Coco Lopez coconut cream, but for cocktail purposes think of it as the sweetened cream-of-coconut product – not ordinary unsweetened cooking coconut cream.
What about Monin Coconut Purée?
Monin Coconut Purée can add coconut flavour and body, but it is another product category and should not automatically replace cream of coconut 1:1.
If you use a purée, rebalance the sweetness and consistency of the full recipe.
Read our syrup vs purée guide for a broader comparison.
Why is my Piña Colada too thin?
- very thin coconut milk
- too much pineapple juice relative to coconut
- excess meltwater from ice
- blending a frozen version for too long
Choose a richer coconut base and control your ice more carefully if you want greater body.
Why is my Piña Colada too sweet?
Cream of coconut is already sweetened. Adding extra sugar syrup, very sweet pineapple juice or additional sweet mixers can quickly push the drink too far.
Taste the coconut product first and only add more sweetness if needed.
Why does coconut separate?
Coconut products contain fat and can separate during storage or temperature changes. Stir or shake according to the manufacturer's directions before measuring.
Vigorous shaking or blending then helps bring the cocktail together.
Shaken or frozen Piña Colada?
Shaken
A shaken version is often lighter and more cocktail-like. Shake rum, pineapple and the coconut base hard with ice.
See our cocktail shakers and shaker guide.
Frozen
In a frozen version the ice is blended directly into the drink. The liquid-to-ice ratio therefore matters greatly. Too much ice makes it dry and diluted; too little leaves it thin.
Which glass for Piña Colada?
Hurricane glasses, large cocktail glasses and tiki serves are common. The main requirement is enough room for the drink, ice and garnish.
Browse our glassware, Tiki glasses or cocktail glass guide.
Can you make a less sweet Piña Colada?
Yes. Use unsweetened coconut cream and add only the sweetness you actually need. This lets the rum and pineapple stand out more clearly.
Can canned coconut milk be used?
Yes. Stir thoroughly first if fat and liquid have separated, then expect to adjust the sweetness.
Can refrigerated coconut drink be used?
Technically yes, but many coconut drinks are very thin and relatively low in coconut. The result will be much lighter and less creamy than the classic style.

Frequently asked questions
Are coconut cream and cream of coconut the same?
Not necessarily. Coconut cream is normally unsweetened and used for cooking. Cream of coconut is sweetened and commonly used in cocktails.
Can coconut milk replace cream of coconut?
Yes, but the drink will usually be thinner and less sweet. Adjust the recipe accordingly.
What is best for Piña Colada?

Is Coco Lopez coconut milk?
