Irish Coffee – How to Make the Classic Coffee Drink

Irish Coffee is simple on paper: hot coffee, Irish whiskey, sugar and cold lightly whipped cream. That simplicity makes small mistakes easy to notice. The coffee should be hot and strong enough, sweetness should balance the whiskey and the cream should sit in a soft layer on top.

Classic Irish Coffee recipe

For one glass, use 40 ml Irish whiskey, around 100–120 ml hot fresh coffee, 1–2 teaspoons brown sugar or sugar syrup to taste and roughly 30 ml cold lightly whipped cream.

Step by step

  1. Preheat the glass with hot water and discard it.
  2. Add sugar and whiskey.
  3. Pour in hot coffee and stir until the sugar dissolves.
  4. Lightly whip cold cream until thickened but still pourable.
  5. Pour the cream gently over the back of a spoon so it floats.

Why preheat the glass?

A cold glass pulls heat from the drink quickly. Preheating helps preserve the contrast between hot coffee and cool cream.

Which coffee?

Choose coffee with enough flavour to stand up to whiskey, sugar and cream. A balanced medium-to-dark roast is a reliable starting point.

Which whiskey?

Classic Irish Coffee uses Irish whiskey. It does not need to be the most expensive bottle, but it should have enough character to remain noticeable.

The role of sugar

Sugar adds both sweetness and balance. For a modern flavoured variation, Monin Irish Coffee Cream Syrup can be used.

How to float the cream

The cream should be cold and only lightly whipped. Too loose and it mixes into the coffee; too stiff and it becomes heavy. Pour slowly over a spoon. An Irish Coffee spoon is useful for service.

Should Irish Coffee be stirred after serving?

Usually no. The idea is to drink the hot coffee through the cool cream layer.

Common mistakes

  • Cold glass.
  • Weak coffee.
  • Too much sugar.
  • Cream whipped too stiff.
  • Cream poured too quickly.
  • Glass too large for the recipe.

For professional service

Standardise glass, whiskey measure, coffee and sugar. Keep the cream cold and consistent. An Irish Coffee set can help create repeatable presentation.
