How to Clean a Cocktail Shaker Properly
Share
A cocktail shaker comes into contact with citrus, sugar, syrup, fruit, coffee and sometimes egg white or dairy. Quick, thorough cleaning matters for hygiene, flavour and the life of your shaker.
Most shakers are easy to keep clean when you act immediately. Problems usually start when sweet residues dry into joints, strainers and lids.
Quick cleaning routine
- Take the shaker completely apart.
- Rinse immediately after use.
- Wash with warm water, mild detergent and a soft sponge or brush.
- Clean rims, joints and small holes carefully.
- Rinse away all detergent.
- Let each part dry completely and separately.
Rinse immediately
Citrus and sugar become sticky when dry. Egg white and dairy residues need especially prompt and careful cleaning.
In professional service, cleaning and sanitising should follow your venue's established food-safety procedures.
Cleaning a Boston shaker
Tin/Tin is simple: two large open metal parts. Wash the inside, outside and especially the rims where the tins meet. Dry them separately and do not tightly stack them while wet.

Cleaning a Cobbler shaker
A Cobbler needs more attention because it has multiple parts and a built-in strainer. Clean the strainer holes, underside of the lid, rim that fits over the body and any narrow joints or threads.

Can a cocktail shaker go in the dishwasher?
It depends on the model and finish. Many plain stainless steel shakers are dishwasher-compatible, while coloured, coated, copper-finish or specialty surfaces may require hand washing. Always follow the manufacturer's care instructions.
Looking after stainless steel
Use mild detergent and soft tools. Avoid coarse steel wool and aggressive abrasives that can scratch the finish. Drying can help minimise water spotting in hard-water areas.
Removing coffee, egg or citrus odours
Wash again thoroughly with warm soapy water and reach all joints. A short soak in warm water with mild detergent can loosen dried residue.
Do not mix cleaning chemicals. Strong chlorine products should only be used if specifically compatible with the equipment and your professional sanitation process.
Egg white needs extra attention
After egg-white cocktails, quickly clean all contact surfaces, including the shaker, strainer and jigger. Professional venues should follow local and company food-safety procedures.
Clean the whole station
A clean shaker should not return to a sticky workstation. Clean jiggers, strainers and bar spoons and keep bar mats free from sugar and citrus build-up.

Dry completely
All parts should dry freely. Do not assemble a wet Cobbler and put it straight on the shelf; water can remain in the cap or strainer and cause odour or spotting.
Why does my shaker stick after washing?
Moisture or residual sugar can make joints stick. Store the shaker clean and completely dry.
If it is already stuck, read how to open a stuck cocktail shaker.
Inspect while cleaning
Look for bent rims, sharp damage, cracks in glass, loose parts or coatings that are peeling. Damaged drink-contact surfaces should be removed from service.
Frequently asked questions
Should you clean the shaker after every cocktail?
It should be rinsed and cleaned between drinks in a way that prevents unwanted flavour transfer and meets your hygiene procedure. Egg and dairy need particular care.
Can stainless steel rust?
It is corrosion-resistant, not indestructible. Incorrect chemicals, prolonged moisture and damage can affect the surface.
How do you remove dried syrup?
Soak briefly in warm soapy water, then clean with a soft brush or sponge rather than a sharp metal tool.
