RCR Timeless Highball glas til Espresso Tonic

Espresso Tonic – Coffee and Tonic Recipe

Espresso Tonic combines aromatic espresso with cold sparkling tonic. It is extremely refreshing when coffee, tonic and temperature are balanced. Coffee that is too hot, overly sweet tonic or too little ice can make the drink heavy or harsh.

Simple Espresso Tonic recipe

Start with one double espresso, around 30–40 ml, 100–150 ml cold tonic, plenty of solid ice and optionally lemon, orange or grapefruit peel.

Fill the glass with ice and tonic. Let the espresso sit for a few seconds, then pour it slowly over the ice. Serve immediately.

Why tonic first?

Adding tonic and ice first gives better temperature control and can create attractive layering. Pouring very hot espresso aggressively into tonic can create excessive foam.

Which tonic?

A classic tonic with clean bitterness is a good starting point. Highly aromatic tonic can compete with the coffee. Read our tonic guide and browse Thomas Henry Tonic.

Which espresso?

A clean balanced espresso with fresh acidity and clear aromatics often works better than an extremely dark, bitter roast. Fruity coffees can pair well with citrus-forward tonic.

Should espresso be cooled first?

Not necessarily. Fresh espresso can be used directly if the tonic and ice are very cold. A brief rest can reduce melting, but do not leave the espresso sitting for long.

Cold Brew Tonic

Cold brew gives a rounder variation. Monin Cold Brew Coffee Concentrate can simplify high-volume service.

How much ice?

Fill the glass well. The ice needs to chill the coffee quickly and keep the drink cold. Read how much ice should go in a cold drink?.

Which glass?

A highball around 300–450 ml works well. The RCR Timeless Highball 44 cl has room for ice, tonic and espresso.

Citrus and garnish

Lemon, orange and grapefruit all work. Use peel or a subtle garnish rather than a large amount of juice. Dried citrus can also provide a clean visual garnish.

Does Espresso Tonic need syrup?

Not usually because tonic already contributes sweetness. A very small amount of vanilla or citrus syrup can soften the drink if required.

Why does it foam over?

Hot espresso, fast pouring and strong carbonation can create a lot of foam. Use a sufficiently large glass, cold tonic and a slow pour.

For cafés

Standardise espresso, tonic quantity, glass and ice. Keep tonic refrigerated and make espresso fresh for each order.

FAQ

Is Espresso Tonic bitter?

It naturally has bitterness from both coffee and tonic, but should taste fresh and balanced rather than aggressively bitter.

Can you use sugar-free tonic?

Yes. It creates a drier profile and may benefit from a different coffee style.
