The Ultimate Guide to Tonic Water: Types and Choices

by Zander Hansen 24 May 2024

What is Tonic Water?

Tonic water is a carbonated beverage that traditionally contains quinine, a substance originally derived from the bark of the cinchona tree. Quinine has a distinctive bitter taste that many find both refreshing and unique. Historically, tonic water was developed as a medicinal drink to combat malaria in tropical regions. The bitter taste of quinine was balanced with sugar and carbonated water to make it more palatable, and thus tonic water was born. Today, tonic water is primarily known as a popular mixer for cocktails, especially gin and tonic, but it can also be enjoyed on its own or with other spirits.

Types of Tonic Water

There are several different types of tonic water on the market, each with its unique characteristics and flavor profiles. Choosing the right type of tonic water can enhance your drinking experience and add a new dimension to your cocktails.

Classic Tonic Water

Classic tonic water is what most people think of when they hear the word tonic. It has a perfect balance of sweetness and bitterness, making it ideal for a wide range of cocktails. Classic tonic water is often made with simple ingredients like quinine, sugar or sweetener, and carbonated water. This type of tonic water is versatile and can be used with many different spirits, from gin and vodka to tequila and rum.

Brands:

  • Fever-Tree Tonic: Fever-Tree is known for its commitment to using natural and high-quality ingredients. Their classic tonic water is made with natural quinine and botanical extracts, providing a clean and fresh taste. Fever-Tree's philosophy is that if three-quarters of your drink is the mixer, you should choose the best mixer, and their tonic certainly lives up to this standard.
  • Schweppes Tonic: Schweppes is one of the oldest and most recognizable brands in the world of tonic water. Their classic tonic water has a light bitterness combined with a mild sweetness, making it a favorite among many bartenders and tonic enthusiasts. Schweppes has managed to maintain its popularity for over 200 years by delivering a consistent and reliable taste.

Premium Tonic Water

Premium tonic water differentiates itself from classic tonic by using more sophisticated ingredients and often natural sweeteners. These tonic waters are designed to highlight and complement the finer nuances of premium spirits.

Brands:

  • Fever-Tree Premium Indian Tonic Water: This premium tonic water is made with natural quinine and a blend of botanical extracts such as Sicilian lemon. The result is a tonic with a deep and complex flavor profile that not only complements gin but can also enhance the taste of vodka and other spirits. Fever-Tree's Premium Indian Tonic Water is ideal for those looking to take their gin and tonic to the next level.
  • Thomas Henry Tonic Water: Thomas Henry is known for its intense bitterness, which comes from using high-quality quinine. Their tonic water has a sharp and clean taste, making it perfect for cocktails where you want to highlight the spirit's character. Thomas Henry's tonic water is popular among mixologists for its ability to balance and enhance complex cocktails.

Flavored Tonic Water

Flavored tonic water comes in a variety of different profiles, from citrus and floral to herbs and spices. These tonic waters add an extra dimension to cocktails and can be used to create unique and exciting drinks.

Brands:

  • Fentimans Botanical Tonic Water: Fentimans is known for its traditional brewing methods and use of natural botanical ingredients. Their botanical tonic water offers a complex blend of flavor nuances, including subtle sweetness and deep bitterness. Fentimans tonic water is perfect for cocktails where you want to add an extra layer of flavor.
  • Schweppes Pink Tonic: Schweppes Pink Tonic is a fruity version of their classic tonic, with a delicate berry flavor. This flavored tonic is ideal for summer drinks and can be used with a variety of spirits to create colorful and flavorful cocktails.

Light Tonic Water

Light tonic water is designed for those who want lower calorie content without sacrificing taste. These tonic waters use artificial or natural sweeteners to reduce the calorie content.

Brands:

  • Fever-Tree Light Tonic Water: Fever-Tree's light tonic water is made with natural ingredients and has fewer calories than their classic tonic. It still retains the characteristic taste of natural quinine and botanical extracts, making it a healthier choice without sacrificing flavor.
  • Schweppes Slimline Tonic Water: Schweppes Slimline Tonic is a low-calorie version of their classic tonic water. It uses artificial sweeteners to reduce the calorie content while still maintaining the familiar flavor profile that makes Schweppes a favorite in bars worldwide.
