Matcha Latte som del af sammenligning mellem chai, Dirty Chai og matcha

Chai vs. Dirty Chai vs. Matcha – Which Should You Choose?

Chai, Dirty Chai and Matcha often appear next to each other on modern café menus, but they are three different drinks. Chai Latte is spiced and tea-based, Dirty Chai combines chai with espresso, while Matcha Latte is based on finely powdered green tea.

All three can be served hot or cold, but flavour, workflow and guest expectations are very different.

What is Chai Latte?

Chai Latte combines a spiced chai base with milk or a plant-based drink. Depending on the product, the profile may include cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, cloves and other spices.

Some chai products are already sweetened while others are not. Check the product information and your recipe before automatically adding syrup.

What is Dirty Chai?

Dirty Chai is essentially Chai Latte with espresso. It adds roasted notes, bitterness and a clear coffee profile. It suits guests who like chai but want a more coffee-forward drink.

See our Dirty Chai recipe.

What is Matcha Latte?

Matcha Latte is made with matcha – finely powdered green tea – mixed with liquid and milk or a plant-based drink. The flavour is very different from chai: green, vegetal and distinctly umami-led.

Matcha can clump if it is not dispersed properly, making technique and standardised dosage important.

See our Matcha Latte guide.

Which contains the most caffeine?

You cannot determine this from the name alone. Caffeine depends on the chai product and dose, the number of espresso shots in Dirty Chai and the type and amount of matcha. Dirty Chai gains additional caffeine from espresso, but specific values should be calculated from the products actually used.

Which is easiest in café operations?

Chai with a tested premix or powder base can be very fast. Dirty Chai also requires espresso. Matcha needs good whisking/dispersing technique and fixed dosing to avoid clumps and variation.

Which works with plant-based milk?

All three can work with plant-based drinks. Oat, almond, soy and other alternatives change the flavour, so test recipes using the products you actually serve.

Three different menu roles

  • Chai Latte: spiced alternative to coffee.
  • Dirty Chai: bridge between chai and espresso.
  • Matcha Latte: a distinct green tea category.

That makes them useful for menu architecture because they are not simply three versions of the same drink.

FAQ

Is Dirty Chai just Chai Latte with coffee?

Yes, espresso is normally added to a Chai Latte base. The exact recipe varies.

Is matcha the same as green tea?

Matcha is green tea, but the leaves are consumed as fine powder in the drink instead of only being steeped and removed.

Can all three be served iced?

Yes. Test the cold recipe separately because temperature and ice change flavour perception.
