Moscow Mule Guide – Vodka, Lime, Ginger Beer and Copper Mug
Share
The Moscow Mule is a simple long drink made with vodka, fresh lime and ginger beer. Its strength comes from the contrast between an ice-cold serve, acidity and a clear ginger kick.
Moscow Mule recipe
- 50 ml vodka
- 15–20 ml fresh lime juice
- 100–150 ml cold ginger beer
- plenty of ice
- lime garnish
Fill a glass or mug with ice, add vodka and lime, top with ginger beer and stir briefly.
Does it need a copper mug?
The copper mug is iconic, but it is not required for flavour. It creates a strong visual presentation and feels very cold in the hand. See the Moscow Mule Mug Copper 500 ml and our Moscow Mule range.
Ginger beer vs ginger ale
Ginger beer normally has a stronger ginger character and is the better match for a classic Mule. Ginger ale creates a milder, often sweeter drink.
Extra ginger
If your ginger beer is mild, a small amount of Monin Ginger Syrup or Reàl Ginger can intensify the profile. Use it as an adjustment rather than a substitute for balanced ginger beer.
Fresh lime
Squeeze lime just before use. A Mexican Elbow Pro makes this fast in bar service.
How much ice?
A Mule should be served very cold. Fill the mug well with solid cubes and serve immediately.
FAQ
Why is it called Moscow Mule?
The name references vodka’s association with Russia and the drink’s noticeable “kick”, although the cocktail was developed in the United States.
Can it be made with other spirits?
Yes. Bourbon gives a Kentucky Mule, while gin creates a gin-based Mule variation.
