Iced Coffee Guide – How to Make Café-Style Iced Coffee

Iced coffee can mean anything from fresh espresso over ice to a creamy iced latte or smooth cold brew. The key is balancing coffee, temperature, ice, milk and sweetness without ending up with a thin, watery drink.

Iced coffee, iced latte or cold brew?

  • Iced coffee: coffee served cold over ice.
  • Iced latte: espresso, milk and ice.
  • Cold brew: coffee extracted cold over a longer period.

Simple café-style iced coffee

Start with a double espresso, 150–250 ml milk or plant drink, plenty of solid ice and optionally 10–20 ml coffee syrup. Fill the glass with ice, add milk and syrup, pour over the espresso and stir briefly.

Can hot espresso go directly over ice?

Yes, provided you use plenty of cold, solid ice. Too little ice melts quickly and increases dilution. Read how much ice should go in a cold drink?.

Cold brew as a fast alternative

Cold brew creates a smooth profile and works well for higher-volume service. Monin Cold Brew Coffee Concentrate can simplify the workflow.

Which milk works best?

Dairy milk gives classic body. Oat drink works especially well with cold coffee, while almond and coconut bring stronger flavours of their own.

Best syrups for iced coffee

Vanilla, caramel, hazelnut and salted caramel are reliable classics. See our Monin syrup guide and browse coffee syrups.

Sugar-free iced coffee

Use unsweetened coffee and your preferred milk, then add a sugar-free syrup if desired.

Which glass?

A tall glass around 300–450 ml leaves room for both ice and liquid. The RCR Timeless Highball 44 cl is a practical option.

Avoid watery iced coffee

  • Use plenty of cold, solid ice.
  • Keep espresso at normal strength.
  • Do not overdo the milk.
  • Standardise glass and recipe.
  • Serve immediately.

For cafés

Standardise espresso, glass size, ice and syrup dosage for more consistent flavour, cost and speed.
