Gin Basil Smash Guide – Fresh Basil, Gin and Lemon

The Gin Basil Smash is a modern green classic made with gin, fresh basil, lemon and sugar. Its colour and aroma come from working fresh basil leaves thoroughly into the drink.

Gin Basil Smash recipe

  • 60 ml gin
  • 30 ml fresh lemon juice
  • 20 ml sugar syrup
  • 8–12 fresh basil leaves

Muddle basil lightly but thoroughly with lemon and syrup, add gin and ice, shake hard and double strain over fresh ice in a lowball glass.

How much should basil be muddled?

The goal is to release aroma and colour without making the mixture unnecessarily gritty. Use a muddler or the back of a bar spoon and avoid pulverising tough stems.

Fine straining matters

Basil creates many small plant particles. Use a normal strainer followed by a fine strainer.

Fresh basil vs basil syrup

The classic relies on fresh basil. Monin Basil Syrup can support a quick or alcohol-free variation, but it does not replace the fresh plant character exactly.

Which glass?

A lowball is classic over ice. The Remy Savage Lowball works well. A straight-up version can also use a coupe.

FAQ

Why is my Gin Basil Smash not green?

Too few leaves, very gentle muddling or tired basil produce less colour. Fresh basil and energetic shaking help.

Can you use lime?

Yes as a variation, though lemon is the usual reference.
