Coupeglas til servering af en klassisk Daiquiri

Daiquiri Guide – Why the Simple Cocktail Is Hard to Perfect

A classic Daiquiri is not a frozen strawberry drink. It is a short, ice-cold cocktail made from rum, fresh lime and sugar. With only three ingredients, every imbalance is easy to taste, which makes the Daiquiri one of the best cocktails for learning balance and shaking technique.

Classic Daiquiri starting recipe

  • 5 cl light rum
  • 3 cl fresh lime juice
  • 2 cl simple syrup
  • Plenty of hard ice

This is a starting point rather than a fixed law. Limes and rums vary, so taste and adjust.

How to make it

  1. Chill your cocktail glass.
  2. Measure accurately with a jigger.
  3. Fill a cocktail shaker generously with ice.
  4. Shake hard for about 10–15 seconds.
  5. Strain into the cold glass with a strainer.

Why is a Daiquiri difficult?

There is no soda, juice blend or long list of flavours to hide poor balance. An extra half-centilitre of lime or syrup can be obvious. The drink therefore teaches precise measurement, acidity and dilution.

Fresh lime matters

Lime juice changes fairly quickly after pressing. It does not have to be pressed seconds before every drink, but tired citrus is particularly obvious in such a simple recipe.

Sugar does more than sweeten

Simple syrup balances the acidity and gives a rounder mouthfeel. If the drink feels harsh, the problem may also be under-dilution rather than a lack of sugar.

Shaking and dilution

A Daiquiri should be very cold while taking on enough water from the ice to bring rum, lime and sugar together. Too little shaking feels aggressive; poor wet ice can make it thin.

Which glass?

Coupe or Nick & Nora work beautifully. One example is the Big Top Coupe. See our Martini glass vs coupe guide for more context.

Classic Daiquiri vs Strawberry Daiquiri

Strawberry Daiquiri is a fruit variation and may be shaken or frozen depending on style. To understand the role of fruit and sweetness, read syrup vs purée for cocktails.

Three things that change it most

  • Rum: light, aromatic or more assertive styles change the character.
  • Lime: acidity varies from fruit to fruit.
  • Dilution: shaking controls both temperature and balance.

Common mistakes

  • Bottled lime juice.
  • Free-pouring.
  • Too little ice.
  • Serving in a warm glass.
  • Trying to fix every sharp drink with more sugar.

FAQ

Is a Daiquiri always frozen?

No. The classic is shaken with ice and served without ice in a chilled cocktail glass.

Can you use dark rum?

Yes, but it changes the character significantly.

Should you double strain?

It is optional. Fine straining mainly gives a cleaner surface.
